Sword in the Stone, The
Sword in the Stone, The (1963)

IMDB rating: 6.80

Plot: This animated feature is set in medieval times. After the English king dies leaving no heir, in the churchyard of a cathedral in London, a sword appears imbedded in a stone inscribed, “Who so pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil is rightwise king born of England.” Although many try, no one can budge the sword from the stone. Deep in the dark woods, kind, but absent-minded Merlin the Magician begins to teach 11-year-old Arthur, who is called Wart, and lives in the castle of Sir Ector where he’s an apprentice squire to burly, oafish Sir Kay — when he’s not washing stacks of pots and pans in the scullery. By being changed by Merlin into various animals, Wart learns the basic truths of life, but he also runs into the evil Madam Mim, who tries to destroy him. Merlin and Mim have a Wizards’ Duel, during which each changes into various creatures, with Merlin using his wits to win. On New Year’s Day, a great tournament is held in London to pick a new king. Wart, attending as Kay’s squire, forgets Kay’s sword, and runs back to the inn to get it, but the inn is locked. Wart, seeing the sword in the stone, innocently, and easily, pulls it out. When the knights marvel at the wondrous sword and question where he got it, Wart has to prove himself all over again, and again he pulls the sword from the stone. Wart is proclaimed king by the marveling warriors. Wart as King Arthur is apprehensive of his ability to govern, but Merlin returns to reassure him.

Could my "theory" about colors and human eye perception be true?
I’ve thought of this by myself a long time ago, coincidentally my brother and a few of my friends have too. I’m not sure if some of you can understand this well though.

We have all been taught about colors and their names. What if what I see as blue is actually red to my friend’s eyes, and what I see as red is actually green to my friend’s eyes, or etc.?

What if, the colors we see aren’t actually the colors that other people see but since each of us was taught by some teacher about the colors of everyday objects we tend to call them names like blue, yellow, purple, etc.?

Another example:

I see a banana as yellow. My friend also sees the same banana as yellow, according to him. But when I use some sort of device (assuming that such device does not exist) to see with my friend’s eyes, I might see the banana as, say, blue, and I see the colors of all other objects are not actually the colors of what I am used to seeing them.

I think the common ones are only the tints, tones and shades.

Weird, isn’t it?

I’ve thought about that too.
benjarick | Nov 23, 2009

Lol. Try to figure why I am laughing.
Anand B | Nov 23, 2009

Not really weird no, your just making something out of nothing. If you have 3 crayons, green, red & blue, you as him to pick up the blue crayon, and he does, you are both obviously seeing blue.
Wardimus83 | Nov 23, 2009

No is not weird and its not new. Isaac Newton worked extensively on what he thought as "color blindness"; because he himself was color blind. Color blindness occurs when a person does not see "actual" colors as "actual"; but sees them in other entirely different tints and harmonies.

Some color-blind people, also, cannot see colors at all. They live in a totally black and white world; while some see colors but see them wrongly. Some have monochromatic color blindness; a situation, in which you only see colors in different shades and tints of a monochrome color, such as red. Some are di-chromatic, tri-chromatic and so on.

My point, actually, is that you should not think of this as a theory or a new discovery or whatever. Its just a raw fact.
ladybird | Nov 23, 2009

I have often wondered if my eyes see colours that others do but to be honest I was working in Sony and I had to set the colours on the televisions and I set them to the right tones and someone checked my work so I can only assume that I was seeing exactly the some colours and tones as the person who checked my work

If it is proven then it is called theory.

Yours is a good and valid hypothesis.

However, this is a subject matter of psychology rather than physics.

You can get better answer if you choose that area in yahoo answers.

However, I can tell you that, there are rods and cones in the retina of our eyes. Three cones are responsible for our color vision.

Three types of cones are there. By experiments, it has been prooved that they do respond to red, blue and green colors only.

Response means the signals or electrical impulses are sent to the brain and brain perceives the colors.

Since it is a physical phenomenon, it should be the same to all.

However, your question is still unanswered, because the subject matter of brain is to be dealt with psychologists.

Pearlsawme | Nov 23, 2009

This is the problem of Spectrum Inversion, it’s a real philosophical issue that has been discussed many times, including by John Locke.

One problem with the theory is that the color wheel is not exactly symmetrical. What I mean by that is, darkening and lightening a shade of blue will affect the way we see the color differently than the same amount of darkening and lightening to a shade of yellow.

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy has an extensive article on the subject.
Ben Chmielinski | Nov 23, 2009

Our eyes don’t see colours our brain does. Our eyes have receeptors for primary frequency bands usually referred to as red green and blue receptors but only our brains can interpret yellow, orange, etc. There are simple experiments to show that exactly the same colours can be interpreted differently depending on the surroundings colours of the object we are looking at.
Colour blind people have the brain capacity to identify all the colours but defects in the eye’s receptors prevents these being triggered. Colour blind people have reported that they have dreamt in colours they have never themselves seen in life.
There is no answer to your basic question of whether we all see the same colours. Do we all hear the same sounds, taste the same flavours, feel the same pain? As everything is relative it doesn’t really mean anything.
Filby | Nov 23, 2009

I understand that because I have been thinking over this for around 5 years.
Perhaps that is the case even with letters and alphabets.

Esmeralda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame?
I’m doing a project on Esmeralda from the hunchback of notre dame and i can’t find much information on her character. if you know ANYTHING about her character, can you please tell it to me in a form of a small biography? thank you so much!

Esmeralda, or La Esmeralda (French: Esmeralda), born Agnes, is a fictional character in Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame (or Notre Dame de Paris). She is a French gypsy girl (near the end of the book, it is revealed that her biological mother was a French woman). She constantly attracts men with her seductive dances, and is rarely seen without her clever goat Djali. She is around 16 years old.

The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries."
-Sir Winston Churchill

I hope that no one present will suspect me of offering my personal criticism of the Western system to present socialism as an alternative. Having experienced applied socialism in a country where the alternative has been realized, I certainly will not speak for it. The well-known Soviet mathematician Shafarevich, a member of the Soviet Academy of Science, has written a brilliant book under the title Socialism; it is a profound analysis showing that socialism of any type and shade leads to a total destruction of the human spirit and to a leveling of mankind into death.
-Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, "A World Split Apart", From an address at Harvard Class Day Afternoon Exercises, June 8, 1978

True Socialism, in which everyone is truly equal, does not just resemble a prison – it is a prison. It can not exist unless it is surrounded by high walls, by watchtowers and by guard-dogs, for people always want to escape from any socialist regime, just as they do from a prison. If you continue your attempts to establish a model society you will need to build walls around it. You will be forced to do so sooner or later by the flood of refugees..

S | Aug 29, 2009

Socialism is basically what Thomas Paine was talking about in Agrarian Justice. The idea is that land ownership is truly owned by all of us as we all need it to survive. And that those who are given ownership through government rights owe society compensation for that benefit of ownership.

Basically if you own something of value, especially land which was the means of producing wealth, you as an owner need to give something back to the community.

The intent behind it is that the strong or the wealthy have a duty to protect the weak and the poor. It is their duty to raise up society otherwise we fall towards tyranny. It’s an attempt to balance society instead of allow a few to control all value while the rest suffer under their yoke of control.
