Fellow Atheists, Do You Follow Any Biblical Rules?
Besides the obvious ones, I mean. I’m hoping you don’t murder.
For example, I follow the rule from Leviticus 23:22 "When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien."
I leave the edges of my garden, & people in my neighborhood enjoy harvesting them. Young children & families walking in summertime especially like the raspberries, & there are some homeless folk who also gather the edges. As an atheist, I don’t do this for any religious reasons, but I I thought it was a neat idea when I read it, & I enjoy sharing the bounty that I am privileged to grow.
Do you follow any Biblical rules? Thanks for your thoughts?

what do you mean "i’m hoping you don’t murder"? …i thought we were supposed to stone our kids and — stuff. it’s so confusing…

I have never used a Bible as toilet paper and that’s about all the respect the book will get from me, I’m afraid. I’m sure there are things mentioned in the Bible which I do, but it is purely coincidental.

You are so sweet. You really sound like you’re of the light. Read the book some more sister and try asking Him to help you with that unbelief problem

Yes, I don’t covet my neighbour’s wife.
(She is pretty ugly actually).

I’m pretty sure I do but not because it’s in the bible. That would be like saying I follow the laws of Japan by no stealing or the laws of the Baboons in Africa by not attacking people holding babies.

Iwill tell you just what I told the others when you are asking about harvesting grain it reminds me of the answer I gave so it does . So this is what I told her exactly, Listen to me because I am telling you what I said to the girl who was asking about the prophet when I told her about the man who was asking for the thing about god and the pitsa well I said It is made from flour that was made in a granary from wheatgrain , and it says stuff about grain in the bible loads and loads of times and that means that because god made adam and eve and they begat everybody eventually that moses got these tablets from god and he told loads of people and loads and loads of years later this god gave his sperm to an angel who stuck it in a girl called mary and it was a baby jesus and he got nailed so he did so there is a god so there because i know because I do know that this book was written by the baby jesuses friends so there there is a god then that shows you just what you don’t know doesn’t it !

Only by coincidence; some of the morals rehashed in scripture are also inherent to humanity, such as not killing, stealing, lying, etc…

You mean the rules that the Bible stole from Ancient Greece? Yeah, sometimes.

I have no idea. I’m not familiar with the Bible. I mean, I’ve read it, and I know a couple of verses (mainly the ones that reinforced my decision to be an atheist, that is those saying we should kill homosexuals, rebellious teenagers, etc). I don’t know if I follow any of its rules. We atheists have morals that have nothing to do with the Bible. Maybe I follow a few rules unconsciously, just because I’m a (kind of) decent human being (I’m NOT saying the Bible’s rules are all decent, because a lot of them aren’t. But some might be).
EDIT:
Oh, wait, I know. I don’t commit adultery and I’m neither rebellious nor homosexual. But that has nothing to do with the Bible and more to do with the fact that I’m 13. xD

Rubbish. Do you realize that our presnt day God is the first deity to ask for money, while religious leaders ride in new cars?

easy for you to say……and …..when the bounty begins to run short……who will you tend to?
I follow one…….." treat others as you would wish to be treated "

Not really, it’s just a coincidence that I do good things. The bible does seem to say its okay to kill non-christians from what I’ve heard from all the trolls here. I wouldn’t know I was never christian. In fact, I used to be a Hindu. I do follow some rules. I don’t eat beef or pork and the rest or the rules(that I know of) besides the caste crap. But, most Hindus don’t follow the caste stuff, anyway.

Honestly, I don’t know. I have never read or studied the Bible. Some may say this makes me a bad atheist because I can’t talk against Christianity from a position of knowledge. However, my atheism stems from an acceptance of science which leads to a rejection of god in general. Rejection of religion is just a natural extension.

I try not to covet my neighbour’s @ss. And whenever I see a fig tree in winter I swear at it.
Oh and if a maniac with a sword takes my shirt, I let him have my coat as well. I’m generous like that.

I’m sure there are plenty of ways that I behave for which we can find biblical verses, like "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", which long pre-dates the story of the sermon on the mount. But I’d suggest there are an awful lot more biblical commands that I wouldn’t dream of following, because most are barbaric.
People have the same basic morality as each other, whether atheist or not, as part of the complex behaviour patterns that evolved in our species, and others. When several behaviour patterns conflict in a given situation, our upbringing, experience, need to live as part of a community, and the satisfying chemical changes that evolved to happen in our brains when we do someone a favour, determine which to suppress; this is often done subconsciously, but can sometimes be conscious. And when this goes wrong, we have remedies as a species codified in laws, penalties and punishments.
Like you, I just don’t attribute the origin of moral behaviour to mythical beings, or claim that the way we resolve conflicting behaviour patterns consciously is through something supernatural called a conscience.
Belief in biblical morality tends to retain behaviours that are no longer considered moral by most people, and for longer than is considered healthy; and this can be harmful. An example of such harmful beliefs, is the belief that homosexuality is sinful.

I believe we shall not murder or shall not cheat, and pretty much the basic principles of life.
However, I totally disagree with "You shall have no other gods before me", because firstly, Paganism comes before your religion and secondly, it’s not something i can tolerate.
Overall, I do follow some verses, but I’m not a fan of the bible. Yes, I’m an atheist, but I’m currently studying Mahayana Buddhism, Confucism, and Daoism.
